Job Search Checklist

  • Join the Georgetown University International Student & Scholars LinkedIn Page to connect to other international students and alumni. 
  • Create a concise, one page resume detailing your relevant work experience, credentials and skills. Attend a resume workshop hosted by a career center on campus if necessary. 
  • Practice writing cover letters until you feel confident in your abilities.
  • Have all correspondence and written documents you send to any employer proofread by a native speaker if you are not confident in your English abilities. 
  • Participate in an interview workshop through the main campus career center and attend the Georgetown Career Fair in September and Government and Non-Profit Career Expo in February to practice networking.  
  • Research the different options available to you for off-campus employment as an F-1 student or a J-1 student.
  • Attend an employment session in person or online in order to learn the employment regulations governing your immigration status. Practice articulating these to an employer in a concise and confident manner. 
  • Apply for post-completion OPT at least 90 days in advance of the expiration date on your I20.  Apply for pre-completion OPT at least 90 days in advance of the employment start date.  Apply for CPT as soon as you have the job offer letter and the CPT request form signed by your Academic Advisor
