Demystifying International Student Regulations

The Division of International Student & Scholar Services supports the international student population in F-1 and J-1 status by providing immigration advising and cultural programming. Additionally, we are charged by the Department of Homeland Security to monitor those students whose immigration status is sponsored by the University. Our office cannot fulfill these responsibility alone, and relies on the partnerships with our colleagues in academic departments in our efforts to guide and support students at Georgetown in F-1 and J-1 status.

In any given situation, students need to be aware of how their academic reality affects their immigration status and vice versa.  It is not the Division's expectation that colleagues outside of our office be experts in immigration law. However, we believe that it is useful for department administrators, faculty, and staff to know some immigration basics so as to be aware of potential constraints students might encounter, and to better work with us to support the international population. In turn we look forward to all opportunities to learn more about your work, and how our Division might support your department's endeavors.

Staff and faculty members can access a quick reference handout that summarizes the information regarding F-1 and J-1 international students on our website. Please click here

We encourage all staff and faculty members to also attend one of our annual department administrator trainings and contact us directly with any questions.
