Off-Campus Employment

Employment opportunities are restricted for international students so students should never accept or engage in off-campus employment without prior authorization from their International Student (IS) Advisor. We encourage students to reach out to their IS Advisor prior to beginning their job search in the United States.

The following types of off-campus employment categories are available to non-immigrants in F-1 status.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an F-1 employment authorization that allows F-1 students to work off-campus in a position directly related to their field of study and considered integral to the curriculum, such as an internship related to a course, fellowship, cooperative education, or any other type of degree requirement.

Pre-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT): Pre-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) is the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in your degree program to off-campus work in your major field PRIOR to your graduation. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is 12 months of available work permission authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that can be used before or after graduation - or a combination of both.

Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT): Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) is an employment authorization that allows F-1 students to work off campus in a position directly related to their field of study AFTER completion of studies. OPT is an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the degree program to off-campus work in the major field. It consists of 12 months of available work permission authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that can be used before or after graduation - or combination of both.

Work with an International Organization (IO): F-1 International Organization work permission is a type of employment authorization for F-1 students who have been offered an internship with a recognized international organization. Such organizations include the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Organization of American States, United Nations, IFC and others.
