Inviting Student Interns
The Student Intern program is a structured and guided work-based learning program for students currently enrolled in postsecondary academic institutions outside the United States, set forth in an individualized Training/Internship Placement Plan (T/IPP), that:
- Recognizes the need for work-based experience.
- Provides on-the-job exposure to U.S. techniques, methodologies and expertise.
Please note: the internship must take place at Georgetown University. OGS will not authorize third-party internships.
- Be currently enrolled in, and pursuing a degree at, an accredited postsecondary academic institution outside the United States.
- Pursue the internship to fulfill the educational objectives for their current degree program at their home institution.
- Have verifiable English language skills sufficient to function on a day-to-day basis in the internship environment.
- Be in the United States to engage in the Student Internship program, rather than to engage in employment or provide services to an employer.
- Be accepted into an internship program that does not involve more than 20 percent clerical duties.
- Be in good academic standing at their home institution outside the United States.
- Return to their academic program outside the United States to obtain a degree after completion of the internship program.
- Have sufficient finances to support themselves for the entire stay in the United States.
- Obtain health insurance that meets the minimum requirements set by the Department of State and maintain this insurance throughout the time in J status.
- Have a passport valid at least six months after the date of intended return to the home country.
- Have not participated in another Student Internship program at the same degree level.
The DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan (T/IPP) must be completed and signed by the host Department, the incoming Student Intern and the IS Advisor.
The host professor must ensure that the Student Intern has English language skills, sufficient to function on a day-to-day basis in the internship environment through an in-person, telephone, Skype or videoconference interview.
A Student Intern must have sufficient finances to support themselves for the entire stay in the United States. Please see the application form for the amount of funding considered sufficient for support at Georgetown University.
If a Student Intern will be paid by GU, they must secure a letter from the home institution’s dean or academic advisor approving the paid employment. The Georgetown host Department should also produce a letter of offer for the paid Student Intern (on letterhead, with a signature) stating the terms of the internship and the amount of payment.
Documentation of non-GU funding may be: (1) a letter or recent bank statement (less than six months old) from a financial institution in which the Student Intern has funds indicating the present balance in numeric figures, or (2) a contract or award letter from a sponsoring institution indicating the amount of financial sponsorship and the dates that the Student Intern’s expenses will be covered. The documents must be in English.
The Student Internship must be full-time, a minimum of 32 hours per week. A Student Intern may participate in an internship program for up to 12 months for each degree.
All Student Interns must be evaluated, and all evaluations must be completed prior to the conclusion of the internship program. Internship programs exceeding six months in duration require a midpoint and a concluding evaluation. Internship programs of six months or less require a concluding evaluation only.
