F-1 & J-1 Student Employment and Internships

F-1 and J-1 students:

  • May work as Georgetown student employees during their program of study.
  • Require prior authorization to affiliate with non-Georgetown organizations and render services even if unpaid and regardless of the employer’s location (U.S./non-U.S. based).

OGS provides extensive guidance on U.S. work authorization for F-1 and J-1 students, including detailed webpages, Canvas modules, live workshops, and individualized advising.

Georgetown Student Employment

Both F-1 and J-1 students need help from their hiring employer to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN).

J-1 students must obtain authorization from OGS before working as Georgetown student employees.

F-1 students are authorized to work as Georgetown University student employees from 30 days before their Form I-20 program start date until their Form I-20 program end date or SEVIS termination date.

After graduation, F-1 and J-1 students need training authorization to re-affiliate with Georgetown.

F-1 Practical Training

Students need Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization to complete academically required experiences like internships, practicums, etc. during their program of study. Please consult the Sample CPT Instructions for Departments (PDF).

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows students to work/intern in their field of study without a curricular requirement before and/or after graduation. Students on OPT may consult their academic program for guidance evaluating whether a potential U.S. role is directly related to their Georgetown degree.

F-1 Off-Campus Employment

Students have used CPT and OPT to work for international organizations. A separate F-1 permit is unique to these employers.

Students experiencing severe financial hardship may be eligible to apply for U.S. work authorization.
